Great Lakes Region, Mackinac Island

October 1-16, 2012

Travel with us through the great midwest.  There is so much to see and so much water!  As we head north we will be spending the night in Tulsa, St. Louis and Chicago.  We will make a stop in Battle Creek, home of Kellogg, traveling on to Frankenmuth for the evening.  The town is similar to the Texas town of Fredericksburg  Our hotel is next to the Bonner Christmas Store.  The store is the largest Christmas store in the world and it certainly seems to meet expectations.  There is something for every style.

Traveling along the coast of Lake Huron, there will be a few lighthouses to view and an enjoyable drive.  We will spend the night in St. Ignace.  The next morning we will be taking the ferry to Mackinac Island.  We will have some time for shopping and an early lunch prior to our carriage tour of the island.   We will spend the night at the Grand Hotel.  We will have dinner at the hotel (dinner dress required) that evening.  The next morning we will enjoy a magnificent breakfast prior to a late departure.  We will ferry back to the mainland and go north to Sault St. Marie for a two night stay.

Traveling in the early morning into Canada, we will take the Agawa Canyon Tour Train.  “This one day wilderness excursion will take you 114 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie, over towering trestles, alongside pristine northern lakes and rivers, and through the awesome granite formations and mixed forests of the Canadian Shield.”  The next day we will be traveling along Lake Superior, taking a boat tour at Munising to view the Shipwreck Tour.  We will spend the night in Marquette and Duluth before we start to head south.

Heading into the  Minneapolis/St. Paul area we will spend the night in Bloomington near the Mall of America which is the largest mall in the U.S.  We will arrive in time for a late lunch.  Traveling into Wisconsin we will take the backroads with an overnight stay at the Wisconsin Dells.  Enjoying a boat tour of the Dells the next morning we will continue on to the Madison area for our overnight stay.  The next morning we will visit the House on the Rock.  The House on the Rock is a very unique place.  It is something that has to be visited and cannot be explained.

Traveling south we will spend the night in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Wichita, KS on our way home.
